How to give Stocks, Bonds or Mutual Fund Shares to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington
When the stock or bond is held by your broker or commercial banker:
- You must instruct your broker or commercial banker to transfer the shares of stock or bonds directly into the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington's account at Dreyfus Service Corporation. Dreyfus Service Corporation is the brokerage affiliated with Mellon Global Securities, the financial agency which services the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.
- Dreyfus Service Corporation will sell the stock or bond on behalf of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington and forward the proceeds* directly to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.
- Dreyfus Service Corporation’s telephone number is 1-800 THE LION (843-5466). The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington’s account number at the Dreyfus Service Corporation is 58L-001631. The DTC number is 443.
- Remember to send a copy of the transfer instructions to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office.
- In the instructions or letter of intent, be sure to inform the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office which agency or ministry your gift is to be applied, i.e., the diocesan capital stewardship campaign Bringing the Vision to Life, Annual Catholic Appeal, the education endowment trust Vision for the Future, Catholic Charities, or a particular diocesan parish, etc.
- This information should be forwarded to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office.
- Ask your broker to fax the date of transfer, the high and low values on the date of transfer, and the number of shares or bonds transferred to the Diocese [fax (302) 573-6947] or e-mail to Rita Mendoza at rmendoza@cdow.org or Donna Hajen at dhajen@cdow.org.
*The net proceeds from the sale of stock or bonds reflect the value of the stock or bonds at the time of the sale (net equals principal proceeds minus any commission fees and taxes).
When the stock is in your possession:
- You can endorse the certificates but it is not recommended.
- Mail unendorsed certificates by registered mail or UPS to the Development Office.
- Mail a stock or bond power (obtained from your broker or commercial banker) under separate cover to the same address.
- Complete the section of the stock power to transfer the stock certificates or bonds to reflect "Catholic Diocese of Wilmington."
- List in the appropriate section the number of shares, name of stock or bond and the certificate number(s).
- Sign the stock power in the presence of your broker or commercial banker and have the "Signature Medallion Guaranteed" by them.
- Enclose a letter of authorization with the certificates or bonds and include a copy of the letter with the stock power.
If the certificates or bonds are already endorsed:
Making a gift of Mutual Fund shares
- To transfer Mutual Fund shares, you will need to transfer your shares held by either your Mutual Fund Company or broker account into an account in the name of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.**
- The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office will work with your Mutual Fund Company or broker to create an account in the name of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington and then sell the shares. It will be helpful if you would contact your Mutual Fund Company for a form that will direct them to re-register the shares into the Diocese’s account. If no form is available, the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office will work with you to draft a letter of instruction to your Mutual Fund Company.
- Please note that most, if not all, Mutual Fund Companies will require a "Signature Medallion Guarantee" (which you can obtain from your personal bank) on your letter of instruction or their standard form. Your letter of instruction should include the following about the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington:
Catholic Diocese of Wilmington
P.O. Box 2030
Wilmington, DE 19899
Telephone: 302-573-3125
Tax ID number: 51-0095439
- It is possible that your Mutual Fund Company may have a "charitable account." If so, you can direct the transfer of your shares to that account and have the proceeds sent to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. If you do so, please make sure that you contact the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office. A copy of the letter of instruction to the Mutual Fund Company must also be sent to the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Development Office so that we can credit the gift to you.
**Prior to the establishment of a new account, contact the Development Office (302-573-3121) to ascertain whether or not a Catholic Diocese of Wilmington account already exists with your mutual fund holder.
